Liverpool will feel more than aggrieved when they look at the Premier League table today, with Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United leaving the Reds in the relegation zone after five matches this season.
Brendan Rodgers’ side started the game extremely well, but were under huge pressure following Mark Halsey’s controversial decision to show Jonjo Shelvey a red card for his challenge on Red Devils defender Jonny Evans.
Shelvey isn’t the first player to get sent-off in a big game however, as the following players will testify. Can think of some other famous red cards in big games? Don’t forget to give us your thoughts at the bottom of the story…
Roy Keane v Manchester City
For Manchester United captain Roy Keane, retribution was the only thing on his mind when he decided to put the boot in to Alf-Inge Haaland’s knee.
The x-rated 2001 challenge was four-years in the making for Keane, who vividly remembered the Norwegian standing over him in 1997 following a challenge which ruptured the Republic of Ireland international’s cruciate knee ligament.
With only ten-men left on the pitch, the Red Devils could only draw the match 1-1. Not that anybody remembers.
Steven Gerrard v Everton
With Liverpool 1-0 down in the closing stages of a Merseyside derby, a young Steven Gerrard showed how not to tackle when he smashed Everton goalscorer Kevin Campbell.
The striker had given the Toffees a 1-0 lead in the fourth-minute, but would have been feeling sore at full-time when Gerrard took him out at waste height.
For the record, Sander Westerveld and Francis Jeffers were also sent-off in a badly-tempered match at Anfield.
John Terry v Barcelona
When Chelsea captain John Terry was sent-off at the Nou Camp, few could have predicted the now retired England international would be helping lift the Champions League trophy the following month.
Terry inexplicably kneed Barca winger Alexis Sanchez in the back, earning himself a straight red card and handing the Spanish side the initiative.
However, goals from Ramires and Fernando Torres spared the centre back’s blushes.
Jens Lehmann v Barcelona
Getting sent-off in a Champions League final is pretty bitter pill to swallow, but that’s exactly what happened to German stopper Jens Lehmann after ten minutes of the showpiece clash against Barcelona.
Lehmann slid out to challenge Samuel Eto’o, but only proceeded to bring the player down and earn himself a red. The Gunners lost 2-1.
David Beckham v Argentina
It was a decision that would haunt David Beckham for years, kicking out at Argentina captain Diego Simeone after a rough challenge from behind.
Laying on the floor, Beckham flicked the defensive-midfielder with his right foot, leaving the referee with little option but to dismiss the young midfielder.
The Three Lions would famously lose on penalties, with Manchester United’s golden boy turning into public enemy No.1 at the time.
