Red-faced Ronaldo misses open goal

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his fine goalscoring form with a goal against Rayo Vallecano yesterday, but the world's most expensive player was also left red-faced by an embarrassing open-goal miss from 6 yards.

The Madrid number seven doubled his side's lead from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, after Karim Benzema had opening the scoring in the first half.

But just three minutes after his spot-kick, the former United star fluffed his lines when it looked easier to score.

Gonzalo Higuain raced clear of the Rayo Vallecano defence and squared the ball across to Ronaldo. But the Portuguese forward inexplicably scuffed his shot, which looped up onto the crossbar.

Luckily for CR7, Real Madrid still ran out 2-0 winners.
