Rio Ferdinand says he is excited by the opportunity to see more of Nick Powell in the Capital One Cup, after the Manchester United youngster was heralded by Sir Alex Ferguson as a future replacement for Paul Scholes.

Powell made his competitive debut for the club against Wigan earlier this month, and scored a goal reminiscent of the player he would appear destined to succeed at Old Trafford.

Ferguson made the comparison himself after the game, and said he hoped Powell would be able to fill the void once Scholes retires for a second time.

The 18-year-old signed only signed for United from Crewe last season, having impressed with 16 goals during his first full season, and is the leading light in the newest edition of Fergie's Fledglings.

Powell is likey to feature prominently in the cup against Newcastle on Wednesday evening, while fellow summer acquisition Angelo Henriquez could make his debut for United.

And Ferdinand can't wait to have a look at some of the club's youngsters in Ferguson's first-team.

"We have some really talented young players and I’m looking forward to seeing some of them," Ferdinand told

"I'm looking forward to maybe seeing our new signing from Chile, Angelo Henriquez. I’m sure Nick Powell will play and I’m looking forward to seeing him again too as he’s a very exciting prospect."
