Manchester United and Manchester City are set to do battle over highly-rated Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal.

The 25-year-old South American joined Bayer Leverkusen from Colo-Colo in 2007, and after four years in the Bundesliga, signed for Juventus for £10.5 million.

The Daily Mirror goes on to claim that the Red Devils have since made contact with the Old Lady over Vidal’s availability, with the club ‘understood to be impressed’ by the player as they search for Roy Keane’s long-term successor at Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United face competition from local rivals Manchester City, as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid, for the player’s signature.

With Juventus valuing the player in the region of £40million, according to Italian reports, Citizens boss Roberto Mancini would have to spend big again to bring the player to the Etihad Stadium.

And, with Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia and Gareth Barry already in the ranks at Manchester City, Vidal would add serious strength-in-depth to the Italian.

Manchester United are relatively short in the position, although PSV Eindhoven star Kevin Strootman has also been linked with the club.
