Liverpool will lead the race for Newcastle striker Demba Ba, with Alan Pardew ready to offload the unsettled Senegalese star in the January transfer window, reports the Daily Star on Sunday.

Ba scored 17 goals in his debut season on Tyneside, after moving to St James' Park on a free transfer from West Ham in June 2011.

But, after finishing 2011/12 on a high, the 27-year-old has been upset at being dropped to the bench in the current campaign, with Ba revealing that he's "not been happy with some of the things that have been going on".

Ba's agent, Alex Gontran, has been demanding a bigger pay packet than his current £50,000-a-week salary, saying: "Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Demba doesn't understand the management.

"If he continues to be a substitute all season we will look at other solutions."

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is favourite to cash in on the uncertainty surrounding the striker, by invoking the £7.5million get-out clause in Ba's contract, as he looks to bring him to Anfield.

Liverpool also have an option to recall Andy Carroll from his loan spell at West Ham in January, and could use the former Magpies star as bait to negotiate a deal.
