Liverpool star frustrated by transfer activity

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has admitted he was frustrated by the club's inability to sufficiently compensate for several summer departures with adequate reinforcements.

The Reds allowed seasoned campaigners Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy to leave Merseyside during the transfer window, while record-signing Andy Carroll was sent on loan to West Ham and Charlie Adam left for Stoke.

Liverpool did, however, sign the likes of Joe Allen and Fabio Borini as Brendan Rodgers focused on youthful acquisitions, but the transfer period was characterised by the failure to find a replacement for Carroll.

Rodgers had hoped to bring in a replacement for the England international before the August deadline, but Liverpool were unable to complete deals for their intended targets.

Liverpool owner John Henry was forced to defend the club's transfer policy following the lack of goalscoring additions amid criticism from fans, particularly regarding the Carroll situation.

Enrique, meanwhile, says the club's players should not look at these failings as an excuse for Liverpool's poor start to the season, but the Spaniard added that he would have liked to have seen more new faces arrive at Anfield.

“The turbulence in the summer is no excuse for players.," Enrique said, as reported by the Daily Star.

“You sign and you must play but of course it was frustrating in the summer as we let many players go and not many came in.

“Our squad has many young players. They can do well for us and we still have great players in the team and it is our mistake why we are where we are now.

“Qualifying for the Champions League would be a dream but I don’t know how long this will take.

“You have to be realistic. You see the level of Man City and Chelsea’s spending in the summer and it is going to be tough.”
