Celtic striker Gary Hooper is being linked with a £7 million move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old Englishman, who enjoyed permanent spells with Grays Athletic, Southend United and Scunthorpe United before moving to the Scottish top flight, has been watched by a handful of clubs from the Premier League.

However, it’s Brendan Rodgers who is described as a long-term fan of the player by Metro, with the paper reporting that the Liverpool boss is keen to add to his attacking options in the January transfer window.

Neil Lennon is hoping he can keep his star man out of the English spotlight though, and is hopeful the player will pen a new deal with the Bhoys.

“He is only 24 and there is more to come. He is certainly enjoying life here and has made a real name for himself. He has been a huge player for me,” said the Celtic boss.

'We are in talks at the moment over a new contract. Negotiations are underway with all the parties.”

Liverpool have been linked with a number of strikers in recent weeks as Rodgers looks to strengthen in attack, with Demba Ba the most high-profile forward to emerge on the Anfield radar.

Rodgers has kept his transfer cards close to his chest however, not giving away who Liverpool’s striker targets are officially when the New Year arrives. It could be a busy month in Merseyside though, with the rumour mill starting to pick up pace in earnest.
