The Football Association are able to appeal the decision to suspend Chelsea captain John Terry for four games and see the ban extended even further, it has been claimed.

Terry was banned and fined by an Independent Commission last week for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand - and charge he escaped sanction for in court during the summer.

The Chelsea centre-back remains available for Roberto di Matteo while he decides whether or not to challenge to the verdict, but the FA could also launch an appeal if they are not satisfied with the outcome.

According to The Sun, the FA are able to appeal the decision in exactly the same as Terry can, as both parties await the commission's written report that result in the four-match suspension and £220,000 fine.

Terry was an unused substitute for Chelsea on Tuesday night as they beat FC Nordsjaelland to record the first victory of their Champions League defence.

A double from Juan Mata and goals from David Luiz and Ramires ensured Chelsea posted an emphatic victory, and the Blues now sit top of Group E on goal difference.
