Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been explaining his decision to join the social media revolution and get a Twitter account.

The Anfield legend joined the micro-blogging site this week with the handle @SGF08, but he insisted he is not jumping on the bandwagon to let Reds fans know his every thought; Gerrard is signing up to help improve the reach of charity, the Steven Gerrard Foundation.

Many of football’s biggest stars use Twitter for many differing reasons and, whatever they are, millions of people obviously want to hear what they have to say; Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has over five million follwers, Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo currently has close to 13.6million people following him and his Brazilian team-mate Kaka is not far behind with just a few under 13million.

Gerrard has told any prospective followers not to expect anything too controversial and that he doubts there will be any FA charges or stories being written about anything he writes.

“I'll be putting tweets out there but I won't be a serial tweeter like some players,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

“There won't be anything too ambitious or controversial. I won't be filling the papers with my tweets!

“It's about getting the foundation out there. That's where the Twitter idea has come from.

“I'm not really a social networker, but if I can use Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness then great. I'm hoping it snowballs and we can get as many followers as possible.”
