Liverpool striker target Gary Hooper is set to for fresh contract talks at Celtic.

That’s the plan for Bhoys boss Neil Lennon at least; after the 24-year-old struck the first goal in last night’s (Wednesday) 3-2 Champions League win over Spartak Moscow in Russia.

"We're hoping to talk to his agent soon about a new deal but he's probably just put £25,000 a week on his wage," Lennon told the Daily Record.

"I'm just delighted for him because he's a great kid who has been a huge player for me. Long may it continue. We want to give him a new contract and we're hoping to get that finalised soon."

Celtic know they will be faced with interest from clubs in the English Premier League for the former Scunthorpe United star however, with Liverpool one of those being linked with a move for the player.

Reports in Metro a fortnight ago claimed that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is a ‘long-term fan’ of the player, with the Anfield outfit taking a keen interest in the contract situation at Celtic Park.

A lack of depth in the position could explain why Liverpool are considering their New Year options, with Luis Suarez the only senior striker of note on the books now Fabio Borini is utilised out wide.

Newcastle and Southampton were also highlighted as potential destinations for the player, who is reported to cost in the region of £7 million in the same story.
