Manchester United target reveals transfer desire

Mats Hummels has revealed he would like to leave Borussia Dortmund in the future – with Manchester United linked with a move for the German defender.

Hummels is regarded as one of the finest centre-backs in Europe after a string of stellar performances for Germany at Euro 2012, while the 23-year-old has also seen his stock rise thanks to his part in Dortmund’s back to back Bundesliga titles.

Manchester United had been linked with a move for Hummels in the past, while Barcelona were also reportedly interested before he penned a new five year deal with Dortmund.

The Old Trafford outfit face something of a defensive crisis currently, with Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all out of action, while Rio Ferdinand’s persistent back injuries require constant monitoring.

Barcelona are also in desperate need of a centre-back, with both regular central defenders Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol missing the Clasico against Real Madrid last night through injury.

Hummels, who should feature for Germany in their World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland on Friday, admits a move away from the Bundesliga could be on the cards some time in the future – and said he has already had offers from big European clubs.

"One day I will say that I am keen on a transfer," Hummels told BILD.

"To play football in a new country would be flattering. I already had offers and one enquiry from these offers was really one of interest for me.

"But I told myself that the time is not right for such a move. There was a reason behind my recent contract extension. When you are a Borussia Dortmund player then you do not move to all clubs,” he added.

While Manchester United may be tempted to land a new central defender, most likely in the summer transfer window, they may be put off by Hummels price tag, a reported £25 million.

"In the Bundesliga it would just be about Bayern Munich, but this club has no shortage in my position. In Europe there are just about four to five clubs that would really interest me."

The Red Devils have also been linked with a move for Fulham’s Brede Hangeland, although Manchester United fans would likely be much happier with the signing of Hummels should he decide it is time to leave Germany. Whether Barcelona would be keen on stopping that from happening remains to be seen.

Hummels quotes come as reports of Manchester United's interest in the defender gain momentum. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was reportedly present at Manchester City's Champions League draw against Dortumund last week to run the rule over Hummels and team-mate Robert Lewandowski.
