Manchester United are reportedly interested in Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, according to the Guardian.

The 27-year-old only moved to the San Siro this summer on a free transfer, but Massimo Allegri's side have endured a terrible start to the season, and the Italy international could jump ship in January.

Sir Alex Ferguson will reportedly get a £25m war chest to spend when the transfer window open, with central defence and centre midfield specific areas to strengthen.

Manchester United have suffered a defensive crisis so far this season, with Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all having spells on the sidelines.

And the Old Trafford boss could spend a portion of his transfer budget on a centre-back, with Fulham defender Brede Hangeland and Borussia Dortmund enforcer Mats Hummels linked with United.

But the middle of the park has also been an area of concern. And Ferguson could turn to Montolivo, a player United have been interested in the past.

The Italy international has 37 caps for his country and played an important role as Cesare Prandelli's side progressed through to the Euro 2012 final.

Milan sit 11th in Serie 'A', with just two wins from seven games. And Allegri's team lost their derby against Inter Milan 1-0 at the weekend.
