Liverpool line up England striker bid?

Liverpool have been linked with a January move for out-of-favour Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

According to Daily Mirror journalist, Martin Lipton, the 28-year-old England international would be a great addition to the Anfield squad, with a move having the potential to benefit both parties.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is short on options in attack following the decision to allow Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan, and the consequent failure to sign a replacement during the summer.

Fabio Borini joined from Roma, but has chipped in with only a solitary goal, while Raheem Sterling has been fast-tracked from the Liverpool academy to provide much-needed support for Luis Suarez up front.

Meanwhile, Bent has fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park under new manager Paul Lambert, after scoring just two goals in the Premier League so far this season.

It's a poor return for the prolific forward, who had started to cement his place in the Three Lions set-up, prior to picking up an injury at the back end of last season, which ruled him out of Euro 2012.

A fresh start at Liverpool could be just what the journeyman striker needs to rediscover his best form, and the Merseysiders could certainly do with another goalscoring threat.

"This was mooted last January," Lipton is quoted by Life's a Pitch, on the Bent-to-Liverpool whisperings. "I thought they should have done it then, because they didn't have enough strikers.

"Clearly they haven't got enough now – they're going to need some [more] striking options. Bent can score, in a decent team, 15 to 18 goals a season, unquestionably. He's a proper goalscorer, he showed it again against West Brom."

Despite finding the net against the Baggies, Bent found himself back on the bench for the 2-0 defeat against Tottenham on Sunday. If he continues to be overlooked by Lambert, then don't be surprised if he pushes for a transfer come January.

"If I were Liverpool, I would do it," added Lipton. "I would give it six-and-a-half or seven [out of 10]. It would make a lot of sense for both the player and the buying club."
