Liverpool Ladies FC have completed the signing of USA international Whitney Engen, reports the club's official website'

The 24-year-old defender will arrive on Merseyside in the New Year, ahead of the Women's Super League season, which starts in earnest in January 2013.

"I have always been very interested in playing in the WSL so when the opportunity arose, I took it," said Engen. "Joining a club with such a legacy and impact in the world of football made the decision easy.

"I want to thank everyone at Liverpool who worked hard on my behalf to make this happen. I am very excited for next season."

Liverpool Ladies head coach Matt Beard added that he was delighted that Engen had decided to join the club, and is confident that she will have a bright, and successful future at Anfield.

"Whitney is a world-class central defender and I've made known since my time here that our back four is an area we are looking to strengthen.

"Hopefully this is the first of many signings for an exciting future for Liverpool Ladies."

Engen spent 2012 playing with USL W-League team Pali Blues, and prior to that she turned out for the Western New York Flash in the US WPS League, winning the 2011 championship.

She started her career with the University of North Carolina, playing as a forward before making the transition to central defence. After becoming a First Team All-American in 2009, Engen was later named Defensive MVP of the prestigious College Cup.
