Liverpool manager has questioned Alan Shearer’s tactical knowledge after the Newcastle United legend criticised Joe Allen.

Shearer used his position as a pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day to claim that that 22-year-old does not attempt enough penetrating passes when in possession in the Reds’ midfield.

Rodgers’ response to this was frank and the Liverpool manager made it quite clear he thought the former Newcastle United captain did not have the tactical awareness to know what kind of job Allen was charged with doing for the Anfield club.

“I saw someone recently criticising Joe Allen for not playing risk passes. Unbelievable. So-called pundits who don't know the dynamics of a team and how it functions,” said the Northern Irishman.

Rodgers’ words risk angering Newcastle United fans, as Shearer is adored by the Toon faithful and is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, as well as being the Magpies top scorer with 206 strikes during his ten years at St James’ Park.

The Liverpool boss also used criticising the former England captain as an opportunity to praise the player he bought from previous club Swansea City in a £15million deal, claiming the Welsh midfielder’s ability to maintain possession was something special for someone born in this country.

“Joe's role is to keep the ball and that, in Britain, is a special talent,” he added.

“It is why Paul Scholes is still playing at his age. It is such a rare talent for a midfielder to rarely give the ball away.”

Rodgers has ten days to work out how to get Liverpool back to winning ways and get them their first victory at Anfield in six matches when Premier League new boys Reading travel to Merseyside.
