Andre Villas-Boas has hailed both Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon as amongst the best players in the world, but says Tottenham starlet Andros Townsend has the potential to join them in the future.

Both Lennon and Bale have been crucial to Tottenham’s recent fine form that has taken them up to 5th in the Premier League, with the latter recently scooping the Welsh Fans' Player of the Year to go along with the PFA Player of the Year award he picked up last year.

Lennon meanwhile has recently earned a recall to the England squad for their games against San Marino and Poland thanks to his fine form against White Hart Lane. The former Leeds winger rounded off a fine display with a superb strike in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Villas-Boas described the pair as world class players when discussing the potential of Andros Townsend, who has made six appearances for the Tottenham first team so far this season having been shipped out on loan eight times since signing a professional contract with Spurs in 2008.

"He (Townsend) has been coming in in the last couple of games and to be fair in the games he has played he has made quite the difference in terms of his contribution to the team,” said the Spurs boss.

“Obviously he competes against the best players in the world with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, and Clint Dempsey can play in the channels too.

“It’s difficult competition but I go back to what I always say – if a player so young like this triumphs over players of this dimension then the future is his.”

Tottenham have won their last four Premier League games on the bounce, but face a stern test after the international break when they play hosts to Chelsea, the first time Villas-Boas will come face to face with his former employers since they sacked him in March.
