Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly instructed his scouts to find another top-class striker to help replace the goals that left with Robin van Persie to Manchester United.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the Gunners chief is concerned about the pressure being placed on the shoulders of new signing Olivier Giroud and wants another hitman in January to help share the load.

Van Persie left Arsenal for Manchester United during the summer in a deal worth £24million and many predicted the Gunners downfall after losing the man that scored 38 goals for them last season.

Wenger is reportedly happy with the squad spreading the burden of scoring – ten different players have found the net this season – but feels he needs further reinforcement due to Giroud’s lack of Premier League experience; the France international, says the report, was signed as a more long-term contingency plan to replace Van Persie.

The difference in the two has been seen already this season, with Van Persie already having notched five Premier league goals for Manchester United this season, while Giroud only got his first against West Ham last weekend.

The report mentions Borsussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski, Spain international Fernando Llorente, Fiorentina star Stevan Jovetic and Adrian Lopez of Atletico Madrid as possible options for a January move in the transfer window.

Arsenal are currently seventh in the league, while Van Persie’s goals have propelled Manchester United to second, but the report suggests Wenger’s willingness to spend in January indicates his belief that they can catch the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
