Vidic targets domestic and European glory

Nemanja Vidic says Manchester United are targeting a historic Premier League and Champions League double this season.

United endured an ultimately disappointing campaign last time round, crashing out at the groups stages of the Champions League for only the third time in 17 years before missing out on the Premier League title by goal difference on the last day of the season to rivals Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have so far enjoyed a solid start to the 2012/13 campaign and sit in 2nd place in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Chelsea.

They’ve also managed to pick up two wins from their first two Champions League outings against Galatasaray and Cluj despite relatively disappointing performances.

Now Vidic, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, believes Manchester United have a squad capable of picking up their 20th league title as well as claiming their 4th European crown.

“Our aim this season is to win both the Premier League and Champions League,” he told the Daily Star.

“We had a disappointing campaign in Europe last season but I think this year will be different. We will learn from the mistakes of last year when we relaxed too much.

“Maybe we had become too complacent because we always seemed to automatically get past the group stage. That mentality cost us. We also had injuries – including my own – and we had a lot of younger players who were adjusting too.

“But now the younger players are a lot more experienced, and hopefully we will now have better luck with injuries.”

Manchester United pick up after the international break with a tie at Old Trafford against Stoke on Saturday, before resuming their pursuit of European glory against Braga three days later.
