Chelsea eye French international as Sturridge replacement

Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is considering making another bid for French international striker Loic Remy, according to the London Evening Standard.

The Blues manager is reportedly weighing up a move for the Marseille frontman as a replacement for Chelsea forward Danny Sturridge.

The England international has barely featured under Di Matteo since the Italian took charge last March, and Chelsea are thought to be willing to offload the forward in January.

The Stamford Bridge side have been long-term admirers of Remy, and reportedly came close to signing the Frenchman, only for it to be scuppered by the collapse of Sturridge's move to Liverpool.

Roberto Di Matteo is short of attacking options up front, with Sturridge and Fernando Torres his only recognised strikers.

Liverpool have been interested in Sturridge since August, and could be tempted with another bid for the England forward in January, but Chelsea are believed to be unwilling to let Sturridge leave before signing a replacement.

25-year-old Loic Remy has 17 France caps, and has been prolific since moving to Marseille in 2010. The former-Nice forward is thought to be viewed by Chelsea as a lower-cost alternative to Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao.

Falcao has a £46m release clause in his Atletico contract, but Chelsea are hopeful they can secure Remy for a fraction of that cost - perhaps £15m - as the Standard reports Chelsea have a good relationship with Marseille following their purchase of Cesar Azpilicueta.

Liverpool were also linked with Remy, as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his forward line, but Chelsea have rekindled their interest in the French international and the Reds may now look to other targets - one of those being Danny Sturridge - and the Standard reports Rodgers could make another bid for the England star when the transfer window reopens.
