Anzhi speak out over Manchester United defender rumours

Anzhi Makhachkala have moved to deny they are in talks with Manchester United centre-back Nemanja Vidic over a move in the January transfer window.

Speculation this week has been rife over Vidic’s future, with Anzhi reportedly ready to offer him a huge contract in an attempt to lure him to Russia.

Reports last week suggested Vidic would be offered £250,000 to swap Manchester United for Anzhi, while others hinted that a sizeable transfer fee would be offered for the Red Devils defender.

However the Russian club have moved to deny they are currently in negotiations with Vidic over a move away from Old Trafford by releasing a statement on their website.

It reads: “Due to the reports published in the mass media that FC Anji is allegedly holding negotiations about transfer of footballer Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United) and some other players, we announce this information groundless.

“The club will inform the public about all new purchases in due time.”

Despite the denial that has not stopped rumours Sir Alex Ferguson could be willing to cash in on the 31-year-old, who has a history of knee problems, should a bid arrive.

Vidic is currently out of action with a knee injury, but is expected to make his return to action next month.

In his absence Jonny Evans has stepped into the team alongside Rio Ferdinand, while potential long-term replacements Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are nearing a return to action after lengthy injury lay-offs.

Manchester United resume their Premier League campaign on Saturday against Stoke at Old Trafford.
