Manchester United target staying put at Real Madrid

Manchester United target Raphael Varane has dealt a blow to the Premier League club by insisting he wants to remain in Spain.

United were linked with a move for the 19-year-old last year while he was still at Lens, before he opted to join Real Madrid.

Manchester United reportedly tabled an offer of over £10 million for his services before the start of last season, while Varane himself said news of the Red Devils interest ‘pleased him’.

However since his switch to the Bernabeu, Varane has found his opportunities limited, giving rise to speculation he could move on.

Despite that, the Frenchman insists he is willing to stay in Spain and fight for his place rather than jump ship at the first opportunity.

"You could have the impression that I have not made much progress," he told reporters while away on international duty.

"But it is false. Clearly we all have to evolve quickly, perhaps more quickly, than we might have done before.

"This has created some impatience, both for you (reporters) and me. But for the moment I do not have reason to think about a transfer."

Manchester United face something of a defensive injury crisis currently, with Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all out of action thanks to injury.

However Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to call upon Smalling and Jones soon, meaning they shouldn’t have to rely on a make-shift defensive line for much longer.

Vidic will return to action next month amid rumours surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

Russian club Anzhi Makcachkala were said to be in the hunt for the Serbian’s signature, something they have moved to deny this week.
