It was a Lionel Messi masterclass once again on Tuesday, as the Barcelona superstar and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain scored in Argentina’s defeat of Chile.

The Camp Nou favourite was the dangerman as Argentina went three points clear at the top of the South American qualification table for World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

Messi and his counterparts weren’t entirely in control of the game early onthough, as Chile mised one or two good chances, but there were no surprises when Barcelona’s talisman broke the deadlock with just under half an hour played.

He slotted home at the near post after latching onto a terrific Fernando Gago through pass – relief for the Albiceleste was enhanced just three minutes later when they doubled the lead.

Higuain comes in for a bit of criticism at Real Madrid due to the chances he misses, but his strike to seal the points was a thing of beauty.

Los Blancos’ striker ran on to a long ball down the right and surged into the area between two defenders, before picking out the far top corner with his left foot.

Chile were left shell-shocked after starting so positively and a late consolation from Felipe Gutierrez was not enough for them to avoid defeat.
