Ex-Liverpool star plays down David Beckham comparisons

Former-Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has played down comparisons with LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, the Real Madrid midfielder spoke about the launch of the new line of clothing 'Black Black' but Emidio Tucci, the company which Alonso models for.

The Spain international is something of a style icon, and his move into fashion has led to comparisons with former-England captain David Beckham, but the similarities extend onto the pitch as well.

Alonso is one of the game's best passers, a midfielder not blessed with great pace, but capable of unlocking a defence with a single cross or raking cross-field pass, much like Beckham.

But Alonso, a double European champion and World Cup winner with Spain, is not keen on the comparison.

When asked by AS what he makes of being called the 'new Beckham', Alonso said: "There's only one David Beckham and I would never pretend to be like him. He's a fantastic bloke but we are different."

Alonso left Liverpool in 2009 for Real Madrid in a £30m transfer, and the Spain international has quickly established himself as the heartbeat of the Spanish giants.

Last season's La Liga win was the club's first since 2008, and Alonso was integral to the way Jose Mourinho's side set-up.

And since his departure Liverpool have struggled, at least compared to their Premier League finishes when he was part of the side.

The Reds managed to climb as high as 2nd with Alonso, Fernando Torres, and Rafael Benitez as manager, but the Anfield club have since failed to match those heights, last season finishing in eighth.

For Alonso, the focus is now retaining Madrid's La Liga crown, and winning a first Champions League for Madrid since 2002.
