Cristiano Ronaldo closes in on Real Madrid legends

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make history at the Bernabeu by passing the goalscoring records of two titans of the club’s history – Emilio Butragueno and Jose Martinez ‘Pirri’.

The Portugal international has 161 goals in 155 games since swapping Manchester United for Real Madrid, but it’s the league goalscoring record which matters here.

Butragueno, known as the ‘natural born finisher’, and Pirri, widely regarded as Real Madrid’s ‘total footballer’, both notched 123 league goals for the nine-time European champions.

Ronaldo currently lies three goals beneath these two behemoths of Real Madrid history, but the scale of the former-United player’s achievements are brought sharply into focus when you consider how long it took Butragueno and Pirri to get to 123 league goals.

Ronaldo is closing in on the figure after just over three seasons at the Bernabeu – Pirri reached 123 league goals after 16 seasons, Butragueno after 12. The former-United player has 120 league goals in only 108 games.

The Portugal international is a global superstar, and a goalscoring phenononem – only Barcelona forward Lionel Messi can keep up. Ronaldo has 10 goals in his last five games, including two hat-tricks against Deportivo and Ajax in the Champions League.

Disappointment with Portugal over the international break can be forgotten this Saturday as Real Madrid resume La Liga action against Celta Vigo, and Ronaldo will be looking to get back on the goalscoring trail.

Just ten more league goals, and he passes two club legends. Ronaldo is writing himself into the record books faster than anyone ever before.
