Manchester City have been handed a potentially huge fitness boost, with David Silva in contention to face Ajax in the Champions League this week.

The Spanish international playmaker missed the 2-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion with a hamstring injury, and wasn’t expected to return until next weekend’s Premier League clash against Swansea.

However, assistant manager Brian Kidd revealed that the former Valencia star is in with a chance of making the trip to the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night, having recovered quickly from the problem picked up whilst on international duty with Spain.

"We're having a roll call today, with scans and everything. David Silva in particular, we don't know how long he will be out for,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

"I think they are looking at him thinking he might be in with a chance of playing on Wednesday against Ajax. With a couple of days for it to settle down, we will get a better picture."

Summer signings Maicon and Javi Garcia are also major doubts for the Citizens, who desperately need a victory against the Eredivisie giants after defeat to Real Madrid and a disappointing draw against Borussia Dortmund.

"Javi Garcia and Maicon are there or thereabouts. They have done a little bit of training but haven't done everything yet - they are back in today and we are hoping the next couple days will bring them on," Kidd concluded.

Whilst Manchester City are yet to hit top form both domestically and in Europe this season, confidence should be high after their weekend victory at the Hawthorns.

A late brace from Edin Dzeko swung the game back in favour of the champions, who played the majority of the match with ten-men after James Milner’s red card.
