Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos, sporting director of mega-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, expects to beat Manchester United to the signing of Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.

The Argentina international impressed in two appearances against Manchester United in last season's Champions League, and has been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford for some time.

But, should Sir Alex Ferguson be serious about his interest for Gaitan, it would appear the Manchester United boss will be strongly contest by Anzhi in his pursuit of the 24-year-old.

According to Carlos, Anzhi have pursued Gaitan since the summer and the former Real Madrid star is confident the club will win the race for his signature at the next available opportunity, ahead of Manchester United.

"There were already talks in the summer but various agents appeared so we backed out," Carlos told O Jogo.

"But now we are expecting a good solution for all parties."

Manchester United are reported to be pursuing Gaitan as a possible replacement for Luis Nani, whose future at Old Trafford remains unclear.

Nani joined United from Sporting in 2007, but his role at the club is becoming increasingly limited this season.
