AS Roma are reportedly ready to make a bid for Athletic Bilbao defender and Liverpool target, Fernando Amorebieta.

A report on talkSPORT claims the Serie A side are on the lookout for a new centre-back and have earmarked the Venezuela international as a possible option, though the report claims he is also attracting interest from Anfield.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers currently has Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Sebastian Coates and Jamie Carragher in his squad for that particular position.

Though Kop legend Carragher is now 34 years old and nearing the end of his playing career, so an interest in 27-year-old Amorebieta could be with an eye on Carragher leaving Anfield or hanging up his boots in the next couple of seasons.

The report claims Bilbao opened talks over a new deal for the highly-rated player, but they have since stalled and this has led to speculation regarding his future.

Athletic are currently struggling just above the relegation zone in La Liga and Liverpool may see it as an opportunity to exploit a difficult situation to land a target.

If the Anfield club do move for Amorebieta, it appears they will have some stiff competition out of Serie A.
