Kompany: Manchester City can win the Champions League

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is convinced his side still have a "big chance" of success in the Champions League this year.

With just one point from their opening two Group D games against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, there is extra emphasis placed on the need for positive results in back-to-back clashes against Dutch champions Ajax, starting tonight in the Amsterdam Arena.

The Premier League champions may have made an indifferent start to their European campaign for the second season running, but that's done little to stem the Citizens defender's optimism.

"We look at the competition thinking we have a big chance and are capable of winning every game," explained the Belgian. "We go into the game with a very good positive attitude and we feel we have had a good start to the season.

"We want to win all the remaining games. All of the games will be very important but I don't think we are looking at any and thinking we can't win. We will always have a feeling we can go into a game to win it."

Roberto Mancini's men are still unbeaten in eight games domestically, and sit in a promising third place in the Premier League table. However, City's players have come under some scrutiny for the manner of their recent performances, which is missing the swagger of last season.

Kompany has also received rare criticism after a costly mistake to hand Real Madrid a last-gasp winner at the Bernabeu, and followed up with another uncharacteristic error against West Brom last weekend, which led to James Milner's sending off.

The 26-year-old has been troubled with a calf injury, but he insists that is not to blame: "My fitness is great, I'm in top form and the international game showed it as well. I'm just looking forward to the many games that are coming.

"When it comes to character and spirit and strength to overturn situations - you can only achieve that collectively. There is no such thing as a one-man team."
