Villas-Boas cools Willian transfer talk

Andre Villas-Boas has moved to cool transfer talk linking Tottenham with a January move for Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Willian.

Spurs and Chelsea were linked with a move for the Brazilian over the summer, while it was revealed yesterday that he has been in constant contact with Villas-Boas in recent months.

Both clubs reportedly had bids turned down for Willian, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to secure a move to the Premier League. Yesterday he admitted it would be a ‘tough’ choice between a switch to White Hart Lane or Stamford Bridge.

However Villas-Boas insists he is yet to formulate his plans for the January transfer window, and says there are unlikely to be too many new faces arriving in north London when the winter window opens.

"He is an extremely good player, but we have to respect what we are doing and the talent we have in our squad and to be fair to you I have not thought about January," he told Sky Sports.

"We have scouts all over the world gathering information but we have not studied January as we have so many players coming back from injury and I think they will be the main players coming in."

Donetsk impressed last night as they secured a 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Champions League last night.

Willian was on fine form as he helped set up his side’s second goal, and Shakhtar director of strategy Joseph Palmer says he is confident of keeping the talented forward in January.

"It can be a little unsettling but I think it goes on a lot in football when another team is after a player, they always find ways to get messages through and that is football and I don't read too much into that."

"For us to continue to progress we need to hold onto our best players through the January window and I suspect we will but if we perform well in the Champions League we are bound to attract interest," he added.
