Arsene Wenger has revealed his admiration for Gunners wonderkid Serge Gnabry – and says the youngster has ‘big potential’ to be a legend in north London one day.
The 17-year-old German youngster joined Arsenal from Stuttgart last year and is on the verge of breaking into the first team, and is expected to feature in the Capital One Cup against Reading tonight.
Gnabry made his Premier League debut in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat against Norwich ten days ago, and Wenger was keen to sing his praises ahead of the Gunners clash at the Madejski Stadium.
“He is a guy who can play in all the offensive positions,” Wenger said.
“I think he could even play centre forward. He has a kind of efficiency in his game, and can get on the end of things.
“He has big potential, creative potential, finishing potential. Serge is 17 years old and strong for a boy of that age.
“It is difficult to compare with anyone. He is not small, he is stocky with good body balance. He glides, he is fluent.”
Wenger is expected to name an experimental line up to face Reading, with outcast Andrey Arshavin in line to get a rare start.
Emmanuel Frimpong may also feature amid rumours he could be shipped out on loan once more to help aid his recovery from serious injury.
The midfielder admits he is still has some way to go before being fully fit, but is keen to get as much game time with the Gunners under his belt as possible.
"I still don't believe I am 100 per cent right — obviously I am playing but I don't think I am ready for the first team yet,” he said.
"I still need two more 90-minute games for the under-21s, then I will be fine.
"Coming back from a nine-month injury, I just have to make sure that when I come back into the team, I am right and ready.
"I don't want to push myself if I am not ready.
"Once you keep playing you build up your confidence and everything falls back into place.
"But I am sure that when the time is right and I am called upon, I will do a good job for the team."
