Liverpool have been forced into an embarrassing apology for the behaviour of the club's communications director Jen Chang towards a spoof journalist, reports Sportingintelligence.

Sean Cummins, a copywriter from Manchester, has received a written apology from Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre after Chang had been fooled by a parody Twitter account.

The 35-year-old built up a sizeable following as 'perspiring journalist' Duncan Jenkins, who deliberately littered his tweets with spelling mistakes and other amusing errors.

But Jenkins had a knack of predicting Liverpool transfers and line-ups to such an extent that Chang became convinced a mole at Anfield was providing confidential information.

So incensed was Chang, that he hired a team to track down Cummins - as revealed in a blog earlier this month - and then arranged to meet 'Duncan' in a Manchester restaurant, where he was threatened.

Chang said he was prepared to ban Cummins from Anfield and also claimed that the press would hound him and ruin the business of his father.

Ayre has since met with Cummins to gain some clarity on the situation and also spoken to Chang about the incident, before the Liverpool MD saw the former again on Tuesday to hand him the apology.

Sportingintelligence posted an extract from the letter: "Based on everything I have heard and seen, including information provided by the parties involved in the matter, I acknowledge some of the elements you highlight were not appropriate …

“I would therefore like to apologise to you on behalf of Liverpool FC, for any upset and distress this caused you.

“Clearly it is not appropriate for me to comment on how the club is managing this internally, and I trust you understand this.”

Cummins has accepted the apology of Liverpool - a club he has supported for 30 years.
