Van Persie rejected Chelsea before Manchester United move

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie reportedly rejected the advances of Chelsea during the summer transfer window, as he strived to secure a move away from Arsenal.

Van Persie left Arsenal for Manchester United in August for a fee of £24 million but also attracted interest from Manchester City, Juventus and, it would now appear, from Chelsea.

According to, Chelsea made a tentative move to sign Van Persie from Arsenal, but the then Gunners skipper rejected their advances as he did not want to leave the Emirates Stadium for another London club.

The failure to acquire a proven goalscorer was a glaring error from Chelsea during the summer, with the departure of Didier Drogba leaving just the inconsistent Fernando Torres as Roberto di Matteo's only out-and-out striker.

Van Persie demonstrated just what Chelsea had missed out on when he affected one and scored another in Manchester United's win at Stamford Bridge last weekend, while Torres was ineffective before being sent off for a second yellow card.

The 29-year-old Netherlands international has scored nine goals in 12 appearances since his move to Old Trafford from Arsenal, and Van Persie will face his former club on Saturday when Manchester United host the Gunners.
