Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the relationship he has with fellow superstar Lionel Messi and welcomed the prospect of playing alongside him.

The Real Madrid man admitted he had a great deal of the respect for his Barcelona counterpart, but claimed the pair were not friends and did not have a personal relationship.

Ronaldo was speaking with beIN Sport, an American television channel, when he revealed his openness for having Messi as a team-mate, though he admitted their circumstances would make it difficult to realise.

“Messi is a great player. [We have] a professional relationship like I have with other players,” he said.

“I'm not a friend of him because we don't share the same dressing room and do not go out for dinner, but I respect him as a professional.”

He was then asked about the prospect of playing alongside the Barcelona star and, with a smile on his face, claimed he would be happy to as long as Messi were to make the switch.

“Play with Messi? Why not?” he replied.

“No problem - if he comes here we'll play together, but me going there is more difficult.”

Messi and Ronaldo have long been discussed as the two best players in the world, with the debate over who is the superior of the two seemingly never ending.

The Barcelona star has had the upper hand in the individual stakes over the past few years, with him being named FIFA World Player of the Year and it’s more recent incarnation the FIFA Ballon d’Or three years running.

It is Messi v Ronaldo again this year with the two, once again, the favourites for the title, though the odds being offered by bookmakers is suggesting it will be a fourth year in a row for the Camp Nou star.
