Jan Vertonghen has demanded Tottenham offer an immediate response to their disappointing 1-0 defeat against Wigan on Saturday by recording their first Europa League under Andre Villas-Boas win this week.

Spurs had the opportunity to put some distance between themselves and their fellow top four hopefuls at White Hart Lane on Saturday, but succumbed to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a second half Ben Watson strike.

“We had problems with their system, but normally we turn it around,” Vertonghen told Tottenham’s official website.

"We just couldn’t do it and it was a shame for the fans because it was a big opportunity with Arsenal losing, plus Fulham and Everton drawing. Overall, it was very disappointing.”

That result has dropped them down into 6th place in the Premier League but level on points with Everton in 4th, with tough fixtures against Manchester City, Arsenal, West Ham and Liverpool to come this month.

In between their quest to secure Champions League football, Spurs’ destiny in the Europa League will become much clearer as they face Lazio in Rome after they square up to Maribor on Thursday.

Vertonghen, an £11 million summer signing from Ajax, admits it was disappointing to have dropped points on Saturday, but says there is no time to dwell on the poor performance with fixtures coming thick and fast.

"The team is strong enough to come back from this defeat,” Vertonghen said.

"We have a lot of important games ahead, important games in Europe and difficult away games. We have to stick together. We know we’re strong in away games and we can win at any away ground."
