Andre Villas-Boas has called upon Tottenham fans to stop booing during games ahead of their Europa League clash against Maribor at White Hart Lane tonight.
Audible boos were heard echoing around Tottenham’s ground during and after their 1-0 defeat against Wigan on Saturday, while Spurs fans also voiced their discontent during the win against QPR earlier this season.
Tottenham now sit in 6th place following the defeat last weekend, level on points with Everton in 4th, and will look to get their Europa League back on track with victory over Maribor tonight.
Spurs have so far recorded three consecutive draws against Lazio, Panithinaikos and Maribor to leave them 3rd in Group J.
Villas-Boas has previously insisted he plans on taking the competition seriously despite some tough upcoming fixtures against Manchester City and Liverpool - and he wants the fans to get on board as well.
“Positive emotion from the stands is very welcome,” the Spurs boss said.
“Our crowd has been amazing in their support for our players and they can make a difference when they are at their best, and that’s what we need.
“This team wants to get back to winning ways and we can only do it together.”
Spurs go into the game having tasted back to back league defeats as well as being knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Norwich.
After their slow start to life in the Europa League, Villas-Boas says tonight’s game is crucial in deciding their fate on the continent.
“It’s reached the stage now where matches start to define the group, we’ll have a real idea of what could happen after this fixture,” he commented.
“Win, lose or draw, it doesn’t mean that mathematically we’ll be in or out, but a win can make a big difference. We will still have to do our job in Rome and against Panathinaikos.
“Maribor’s game at Lazio was very competitive and to be fair, they could have got a better result (they lost 1-0). They are a team with a winning mentality.
“We have to do our job. We hope to put on a good performance and try to get the three points.”
