Wayne Rooney has admitted the role of Manchester United talisman has passed from him to new signing Robin van Persie.
The England international has been the shining light of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team for the past few seasons, but he has heralded the arrival of Van Persie from Arsenal as the emergence of a new hero at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman’s controversial switch angered many Gunners fans, but their Manchester United counterparts won’t be losing any sleep over their rivals’ discontent as he has already made himself crucial to the side.
Rooney was by far and away United’s top attacker last season with 34 goals, but he was outdone by Van Persie’s 37 at Arsenal and the new boy is already streaking ahead of his team-mate with 11 strikes in 14 games.
“I think he's great for the whole team; he's our talisman,” he is quoted as saying in The Independent.
Rooney then described why Van Persie has been so effective since joining the Red Devils and insisted that things could get even better if United were able to utilise his talents.
“He has a calmness about him, he holds the ball up well and brings players into play. We have to try and get players around him,” he added.
United are currently sitting top of the Premier League after ten games and look as though they are getting stronger – they may not give up the spot if Van Persie and Rooney continue to link up as they are currently.
