Arsenal join £8m transfer scramble for Barcelona starlet

Arsenal are the latest Premier League club to be linked with a move for Barcelona starlet Cristian Tello.

El Mundo Deportivo reported yesterday that the 21-year-old is yet to sign a new contract at the Nou Camp, with a minimum fee release clause reported to be the major stumbling block over a new deal.

The Spanish U23 international is able to talk to other clubs if an £8 million offer is received, but with Tello’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season, he could leave for nothing in the summer.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was initially reported to be leading the English chase for the player alongside Spurs, but The Daily Star now speculates that Arsenal are keen on bringing the player to the Premier League, and are ‘scrambling’ to land the player alongside the Anfield outfit.

Arsene Wenger has a track record of bringing young players to north London from Catalonia, with Cesc Fabregas, Hector Bellerin and Jon Torral all moving to the Emirates Stadium from Spain.

Tello would be the highest-profile addition for the Gunners from Barca however, with the winger forcing his way into Tito Villanova’s side on a regular basis this season.

That’s no guarantee that he will stay with the Blaugrana however, and an opportunity could arise for Arsenal to pounce if the new three-year offer with last season's La Liga runners-up remains unsigned.
