Four Premier League players have been nominated for the FIFA African Footballer of the Year award, including John Obi Mikel, Gervinho and Yaya Toure.

An original 34-man shortlist has been whittled down to 10, and the English top flight is strongly represented on the list.

Former-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been nominated for his Premier League and Champions League exploits, and is among the favourites to scoop the award.

The Ivorian frontman scored the equalising goal and the winning penalty as Chelsea won their first ever Champions League trophy last season. But the former-Blue faces stiff competition from Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester City representatives.

Last year's winner, Yaya Toure, has a good chance of retaining his crown after helping Manchester City to their first league title in 44 years, and their first ever Premier League title.

The Ivory Coast midfielder was a dominant force in the middle of the City midfield, and was one of Roberto Mancini's key players during the title run-in.

Toure's international compatriot, Arsenal forward Gervinho, also makes the 10-man shortlist, and the former-Lille star has an outside chance after playing an important role as Arsenal qualified for the Champions League and Ivory Coast reached the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Gervinho's former-Arsenal teammate Alex Song may have departed for Barcelona, but the Cameroonian is shortlisted for his work at the Emirates Stadium. An important reason why Robin Van Persie scored so many goals last year, Song recorded 11 assists for the Gunners during his final campaign at the club.

Didier Drogba's ex-Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel is also nominated. The Nigerian starred in Chelsea's run to the Champions League and FA Cup finals, and Mikel has established himself at the heart of the Stamford Bridge midfield.
