Former-Tottenham centre-back Ledley King has backed Steven Caulker to push on in the Spurs first-team after his England call-up.

Caulker earned national recognition this week when he was called into Roy Hodgson's England squad for the friendly against Sweden, and King believes the 20-year-old will benefit hugely from the experience.

Caulker is one of a number of players to graduate from Tottenham youth team to first-team, and the young defender has followed the same career path so far as King, himself a Spurs academy product.

And King, a former-England defender and Tottenham captain, believes Caulker's call-up will led to an improvement in his performances for his club.

"Having been there myself, it's a big confidence booster when you first go into the England squad," said King in the Evening Standard. "You come back to your club with you head held high. You're so confident and you really believe you are a player.

"It was a brilliant feeling and it will be beneficial for Tottenham when Steven wins that first cap. He has been fantastic.

"He has slipped into the team seamlessly and is so composed for one so young. It's brilliant for him that he has been called into the England squad."

Caulker joined Spurs in 2007, but spent time on loan at Yeovil Town, Bristol City and Swansea City, before breaking into the first-team at White Hart Lane this season.

His performances at the Liberty Stadium last year convinced the Spurs coaching staff that Caulker had what it takes to marshall a defence, and the youngster has been preferred to Michael Dawson this campaign.

The centre-back has represented England under-19 and England under-21's, and played for Stuart Pearce's Great Britain at the London Olympics this summer.
