Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has had his say on the club’s January transfer plans, and believes Emmanuel Adebayor could be the answer to the striker shortage on Merseyside.
The 39-year-old ex-Germany international spent seven years at Anfield between 1999 and 2006, playing his part in the famous 2001 treble, as well as the Champions League triumph four-years later.
Now a renowned pundit, Hamann took to Twitter to voice his opinions after the draw against Chelsea, and believes the Togolese striker could be the answer for Brendan Rodgers.
“Two or three players are badly needed in January as the kids R (sic) playing at their limit and will need a break,” he Tweeted.
“If I could take one player and there might be a chance to it would be (Emmanuel) Adebayor … on his day monstrous - he would get the love at LFC he needs.”
Adebayor has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Tottenham Hotspur this season, spending much of the season on the substitute’s bench as Jermain Defoe leads the line.
Andre Villas-Boas brought the player to White Hart Lane after a successful loan campaign under ex-Spurs boss Harry Redknapp the previous season, but he’s yet to hit the same heights once again under his new manager.
His goalscoring record with Arsenal and Manchester City can’t be disputed however, and after hitting 17 goals in 33 Premier League matches last season for Tottenham, he certainly seemed like a bargain at £5 million.
How much Liverpool would have to pay to lure the player to Anfield in January is up for debate, but if they can’t get Adebayor, the ex-Stockport manager has a couple of other ideas.
“You need to see who you can get but I wouldn't mind Walcott and Bent plus an offensive midfielder/Dembele,” he Tweeted.
Hamann also dismissed the idea of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar moving to Liverpool in the New Year, believing the Dutch hitman is happy at Schalke and enjoying life in the Champions League.
“Can't see Huntelaar coming he seems to be happy in the fatherland plays CL and is adored by their fans,” Hamann concluded on Twitter.
