European Goals of the Week: 17/18 November

With another brace against Zaragoza, Lionel Messi took his tally for 2012 to 77 - eight short of Gerd Muller's single-season record for club and country.

As usual, they were excellent goals. The first, Messi started and finished himself, bursting through the Zaragoza defence, playing a neat one-two, before slotting home.

His second was similar in the sense that Messi kicked things off, passing out wide to Pedro. But this time he hung back, received the pass on the edge of the box, and from 20 yards out, curled the ball artfully past the Zaragoza keeper.

In between the two, he slinked past three defenders to set up Alex Song for his first ever Barcelona goal.

But the mini Argentinian was not the only star this weekend, Serie 'A' in particular played host to some superb matches, as Milan came from 2-0 behind to earn a draw with Napoli and city rivals Inter were held by Caligiri.

Anyway, without further ado, here are your European Goals of the Week…

Stephan El Shaarawy - AC Milan v Napoli

The Italy international got Milan out of jail with a fantastic brace this weekend. Both goals were smartly taken, but his first in particular was a peach.

Karim Benzema - Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao

A brace for Karim Benzema, and an excellent one at that. His second was a classy turn and hit, but his first was all instinct, technique and awareness - the hallmarks of a world-class striker.

Alberto Aquilani - Fiorentina v Atalanta

The former-Liverpool midfielder has flourished on his return to Serie 'A' as part of a free-flowing Fiorentina midfield, and his free-kick against Atalanta was timely reminder for Liverpool fans, if any was needed, of what a great player he actually is.

Alberto Gilardino - Bologna v Palermo

The former-Italy frontman is approaching the end of his career, but the old sharpness around the box is still there. A flash of the right boot put paid to Palermo on this occasion, but Bologna have struggled without Gaston Ramirez, and it looks like a long season for the Italian side.

Antonio Di Natale - Udinese v Parma

The 35-year-old forward plays like his FIFA video game character, and this goal against Parma summed him up. Great first touch, soft technique, and brilliant improvisation.
