Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be handed a bumper £40 million transfer kitty to improve is squad during the January transfer window, according to the Telegraph.

According to the paper, Arsenal's board will back under-fire Arsene Wenger, who oversaw a lifeless 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, with a sizeable transfer kitty to help fire the north London club up the league.

Recent wins over Tottenham and Montpellier looked to have helped the Gunners move past a rough patch which saw them go three games without a victory, but the draw with Villa has once more left the club's fans frustrated.

The draw was compounded by wins for Tottenham and West Brom, meaning that just six points separate the Baggies in third place from Spurs in 7th.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis announced on Friday a new £150 million sponsorship deal with Emirates, and promised the extra cashflow would be used to help fund squad improvements.

Wenger himself has been made aware that money has been made available.

“I knew about the money before," the Frenchman said. "It means the people who invest in us believe we are doing things in the right way. So it’s first a credit in the way we do things and after that, we try to use the money intelligently.”

That could mean a move for another striker when the winter window opens, with Spanish pair Fernando Llorente and Adrian Lopez said to be on Arsenal's radar, while Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is also a target.

A new keeper is believed to be another priority for Wenger, who has seen neither of his two goalkeepers, Vito Mannone and Wojiech Szczesny impress this season. A move for a new full-back could also be on the cards.

The Gunners face a tough tie on Wednesday as they travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton as the Premier League fixtures start to come thick and fast.
