Five Premier League midfielders in FIFA/FIFPro shortlist

Chelsea duo Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and Manchester City pair David Silva and Yaya Toure are among the midfielders to be shortlisted for the FIFA/FIFPro World XI 2012.

The final World XI will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala in January, and Lampard, Hazard, Gerrard, Silva and Toure are the only Premier League representatives among the 15 midfielders in contention.

Six of the players on the shortlist are Spanish, with Silva joined by Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, while seven of the 15 players named play for either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Alonso makes the cut alongside Real Madrid teammates Mesut Ozil and Luka Modric, while Busquets, Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi represent Barcelona.

There are two representatives from the Bundesliga, both players of Bayern Munich, in Bastian Schweinsteiger and Franck Ribery, while Italian veteran Andrea Pirlo is also included.

The announcement of the 15 shortlisted midfielders follows the reveal of five goalkeepers and 20 defenders competing to make the final XI, while the strikers while be announced on November 29.
