Liverpool have been delivered a blow in their reported pursuit of Oscar Cardozo with the news that Benfica have entered into negotiations with the striker regarding a new contract.

Cardozo has been touted as a potential January transfer window recruit for Liverpool as the Reds strive desperately to bring goalscoring reinforcements to Anfield.

Luis Suarez is the only fit senior striker currently available to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, with summer acquisition Fabio Borini sidelined with a broken foot.

And with Andy Carroll sent out on loan to West Ham, Liverpool are worryingly light in their forward department, and new recruits will be imperative in January.

According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have been scouting Cardozo with a view to a transfer window move for the Paraguay international, who has scored nine goals in 12 appearances for Benfica this season.

However, Benfica reportedly hope to nip any Liverpool interest in the bud, by offering the 29-year-old a new two-year contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
