FIFA/FIFPro have announced the World XI shortlist for forwards, and nominations for this year's team include Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The annual award picks the 11 best players in the world, and arranges them in a token formation. This year, FIFA/FIFPro have released the nominations in stages, first goalkeepers, then defenders, midfielders, and finally forwards.

Messi and Ronaldo each receive their fifth consecutive nomination in the forward category, while Santos star Neymar makes the striker shortlist for the first time ever. And Messi and Ronaldo - who have made the last four World XI teams - will be favourites once again, especially after Messi's 50-goal La Liga season, and Ronaldo's 46-goal haul.

Five Premier League players have been nominated, four La Liga strikers, one from Serie 'A', one from Ligue 1, one from China, one from the Bundesliga, one from Russia and one from Brazil.

Three of the 15 strikers will be presented during the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala, to be held on Monday 7 January 2013.

These three will make up the forward line for the FIFA/FIFPro World XI - last year the three nominees chosen in the final presentation were Messi, Ronaldo and Rooney.

The 15 nominees were chosen after a worldwide vote. Professional footballers from around the world had their say on who they believe were the best attackers in 2012.

Here is their list…

Sergio Aguero (Argentina, Manchester City)

Mario Balotelli (Italy, Manchester City)

Karim Benzema (France, Real Madrid)
