Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been greatly impressed by the club's summer signing Robin van Persie, and admits he is in awe of the £24million striker.

The 29-year-old Dutchman has settled quickly into life at Old Trafford, having already scored 12 goals in just 18 appearances for his new club.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been full of praise for the former Arsenal captain, for the way he has integrated into the first-team, and now De Gea has lauded the impact his new team-mate has made.

"You can only sit back and admire his finishing inside the penalty area," the Spanish stopper told the Manchester Evening News.

"When the ball falls to Robin it's as if you can predict the outcome before he's even taken his shot - he's deadly inside the box and he knows where the goal is.

"I have to admit he scores a few goals in training against me. We all try to make it as hard as possible for him, but he still manages to score sometimes."

Van Persie has always scored goals, and picked up the Premier League Golden Boot in his final season with Arsenal in 2011/12. But, now that De Gea is on the same team as the Holland international, his natural goalscoring instinct and ability to find the back of the net has become even more obvious.

"On the pitch he has settled extremely quickly," added the Spaniard. "Of course we knew he was a fantastic player when he was at Arsenal, but it's not always easy to transfer that form to another club. He's done it right from the start."

De Gea currently finds himself dislodged from the Manchester United No.1 spot, with Anders Lindegaard preferred between the sticks. However, he will be hoping to regain his place in the side as quickly as possible.
