Gareth Bale is starting to build a reputation as a diver, after he was shown his fourth yellow card for simulation on Saturday, with his theatrical displays drawing comparisons to Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Welsh winger was once again a target for criticism in Tottenham's 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, a match that marked the 23-year-old's 99th Premier League appearance for Spurs.

Similarities between Ronaldo and Bale are becoming increasingly easy to draw, and not just because of the controversy regarding the latter's susceptibility to hit the deck. His form at White Hart Lane this season has been nothing short of sensational, leading to suggestions that he should be considered as one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp - who coached Bale during his time at Tottenham - set the ball rolling when it came to comparing his former charge to the current giants of world football last week.

"He's an amazing talent and he's after the Ronaldos and Messis of this world and he's getting better and better," he said. "He's almost unplayable when he's on his game.

"He can head it, he can dribble, he can shoot, he's got a great physique, he's an amazing athlete, he can score with both feet - there are no weaknesses in his game.

"He is a genuine world-class player. There's nobody he couldn't play for. He'd improve any team."

Bale's former Spurs team-mate Luka Modric also recently claimed the Welsh international would not be out of place gracing the hallowed turf of the Santiago Bernabeu, with the likes of Ronaldo for company.

But is the former Southampton star really in Ronaldo's class, despite possessing such similar attributes? Maybe not, just yet. But, judging by statistics comparing the two players from their first century of Premier League games, Bale is on course to surpass the Portuguese international, and become even better.
