A goal and an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night.
Given the impressive La Liga form of Diego Simeone's side, the clash had been built up as Los Rojiblancos big chance for a first derby win this century, but the visitors never threatened after Ronaldo ended his 310-minute goalless spell when he fired the hosts ahead after 15 minutes.
Real Madrid's lead was doubled when a mistake from Atletico defender Miranda saw his mistimed header fall to Ronaldo, whose clever switch pass teed up Mesut Ozil to fire low past Thibaut Courtois.
All in all, it was a relatively underwhelming game, with Radamel Falcao cutting a forlorn figure up front for Atletico, with the Colombian's most notable contribution a frustrated looking hack on substitute Jose Callejon that brought a late yellow card.
The only other moment of brilliance came once again from Ronaldo, who breaking from an Atletico Madrid corner, charged up the other end of the field to unleash a shot that rebounded off Courtois' left post - denying the Portuguese forward a second goal.
Replays showed that his rapid 96 metre dash was completed in just over 10 seconds - a time that would qualify the 27-year-old for elite level athletics competition - to rival that of Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt!
While his contract situation remains up in the air, nobody can doubt Ronaldo's commitment once he gets on the pitch, or his ability to produce in big La Liga games.
Saturday's goal means he has now scored eight in eight derby matches against Atletico, all of which Madrid have won.
