David Beckham plans to talk the best players in the world - including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - into finishing their careers in the MLS.

The former-England captain ended his five-year stint with LA Galaxy this weekend, helping his club to win their second consecutive MLS Cup.

Beckham is set for "one last challenge", but has pledged to return to America to begin his long-term project to attract the world's best players to the MLS.

Beckham's idea harks back to the heady days of 1970's American soccer, when the likes of Bobby Moore, Pele and George Best saw out their final playing days in the land of opportunity.

And Beckham hopes to one day buy his own MLS franchise, and to go about attracting the game's top talent in an effort to keep growing the sport stateside.

The 37-year-old could feasibly have first pick of the world's best stars while helping to lure other stellar names to America's top division.

The Daily Mirror carries reports from the Sunday People which claimed MLS commissioner Don Garber has already held discussions with Beckham to draw up plans on how best to bring the likes of Messi and Ronaldo to the US.

Garber is thought to see Beckham as the division's trump card - helping the MLS to beat its competition - the likes of China and Qata - when it comes to attracting ageing superstars for one final stint in the sun.

Beckham's clout could help in negotiations with the world's top talent, and may help persuade players like Messi and Ronaldo to end their playing days in the States - and potentially providing Beckham with one of the most lucrative franchises in the USA.

The former-Manchester United star has been linked with a fresh bid for a re-formed New York Cosmos team, ex-Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer and Pele played for the franchise at its peak in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Each MLS team is allowed four designated players who can be paid outside the main wage cap - giving the green light for a mega-rich franchise to pay big bucks to land Messi or Ronaldo.
