Chelsea set to renew interest in Serie 'A' playmaker

Chelsea are set to renew their interest in Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik when the transfer window reopens in January, according to the Daily Express.

The Slovakian international emerged as a transfer target for the Stamford Bridge club last season, but Hamsik eventually decided to commit his future to his Serie 'A' employers.

The report claims Chelsea also retain an interest in Hamsik's teammate Edinson Cavani, although the Uruguayan striker remains a more difficult target.

Hamsik could be tempted by the promise of Champions League football - something Chelsea can offer - however the Blues have a number of options in the position the Napoli star likes to operate in.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich shelled out close to £65m for Oscar and Eden Hazard over the summer, and with Juan Mata, Victor Moses and Marko Marin also competing for starting berths, it seems unlikely Chelsea would try and further clutter their attacking midfield.

But the Slovakian star has an impressive record for his Italian club - 30 goals in 89 appearances - and helped the side to the Champions League knock-out round last season, where they lost to Chelsea.

A disappointing league campaign last year meant they are not competing in this year's European competition, while Chelsea are defending champions.
